You follow these — you would never say them
de, d, s — that is the whole set
The rule
Three articles and no others: «de» for masculine, «d» for feminine, «s» for neuter. «der», «die» and «das» do not occur.
De Maa, d Frau, s Huus.
Der Mann, die Frau, das Haus.
S Velo staht vor em Huus.
Das Fahrrad steht vor dem Haus.
Gib s Rüebli em Chind.
Gib die Karotte dem Kind.
Where it catches you
They look like swallowed German articles but they are the full form, not a lazy contraction. And the gender does not always match the German one: «s Rüebli» is neuter where the German carrot is feminine.
