The rule
What is happening right now is said as «bi/isch/sind am» plus the plain verb: «Ich bi am schaffe».
Ich bi am schaffe.
Ich arbeite gerade.
Si isch am Znacht choche.
Sie kocht gerade Abendessen.
Mir sind scho lang am warte.
Wir warten schon lange.
Where it catches you
German has no such form and reaches for «gerade» instead. You will follow the sentence without it — but never using it is what keeps you sounding like standard German with Zurich words in it.
